PR News Analysis Brief 4

PR Perspectives: How Segmenting Audiences Is Creating Giant Value for Companies
In a world that is so fast paced and mobile heavy, companies need to leverage their way of marketing to specific audiences. The article does a great job in addressing the need to identify each target public and market to their specific needs. Starbucks for example, has both a mid-old audience with higher income that they market to, as well as a very young-early adulthood with no to low income that they also market to. Starbucks is a great example of segregated marketing because of these two very different audiences. This also applies to companies that cater to professional audiences as well, B2B, B2C and B2E.

Companies are able to utilize segregated marketing in all platforms of communication. Separate navigation on your website is a hot tool that many businesses are taking advantage of. By creating “who you are” options for customers visiting your page can not only give them the information they need, but it can create a sense of importance in their time and interaction. Creating different email lists of specified audiences and tailoring emails to each. This can also come into play when using SMS or Social media posts. Knowing your audience is one of the most important ways for a business to be successful.

As we enter into the PR world many clients will need assistance in understanding ways to segregate marketing and also the importance behind it. We need to understand that not one fits all as our world continues to move even more toward social/digital. Everyone’s time is valuable, and giving consumers what they need right off the bat, is the key to better business.

“Air” Conditioning: Human-Interest and Visual Angles Are Keys to Pitching TV
This article breaks down how to get your story on TV and keep viewers interested. PR professionals need to be prepared when it comes to pleasing viewers and getting their story heard. Today we can scroll through just about anything and everything in a short amount of time. What do we need to do to get our stories to the forefront of people’s view? Making sure that the article is appealing, along with visuals that tell the story. No one wants to just watch a clip of someone talking about a story, people want a clip that shows the story, gives them a face, gives them proof.

The content is important when standing in the shoes of a PR professional, but so it the way it is presented. Most people forget that getting the approval to get on camera is only part of the battle. You need to get the camera (and equipment) there and ready to film. The success stories of having the best and longest parts of your clip shown are the stories that involve help. PR professionals that meet in the middle, assist when needed and be ultimately responsive.

Having your clip ready to shoot is another key factor is considering time and efficiency. Researching your target audience to see what would most appeal to them and executing the perfect bit to put in front of their eyes.

These are just a few pieces of PR that we must not forget. Creating that perfect newsworthy story to either redirect from crisis or promote is a crucial piece to the success of yourself and of a client.

Assignment 2.1

Both the email and the press release are very unprofessional. Starting with the explanation of the email, the subject line was not even capitalized, an event doesn’t seem very exciting without the title capitalized. The writer also doesn’t use proper email format. You should always address the recipient by name or “to whom it may concern” and space down to begin the body of the email. The body of the email in this case isn’t very informational. This is the spot where you should explain why this event/exhibit is important. Nothing is “newsworthy” due to a holiday unless it is actually something that people want to know about. Assuming your reader and the audience would be interested is ignorant and again, unprofessional. The picture attached to the email has nothing to do with the exhibit, to our knowledge, since we have no idea what this exhibit is.

Moving on to the news release and where it also went wrong, the format is not correct. The spacing is off and instead of breaking it down into categories they writer should have explained the exhibit in greater more exciting depth. The body of a news release is the space where you tell why this is important and where you make your news something to care about. This part of the news release looks more like a poster for the event. Then scrolling to the next page, and page after that is where some serious explaining happens. This however is the wrong approach. No one wants to read a long news release such as this one. The information is ok, but the call to action isn’t making me want to attend.

In summary this entire story, both email and news release is a bore do to the writer. I would’ve liked to see something more creative and enticing.

Assignment 2.4

If I were creating a digital media kit for Tetra Corp., about fish feeding and concepts around that topic there are a few things I would include. I would first provide a summary of what my product is. I think it would make sense to first start out with stating why Tetra Corp. is reputable in this area and on this topic.

Then I would begin in with the idea of the food pyramid, describing how it works and why this type of food balance is important. I would then describe the food groups that make up the pyramid and why those foods are the most beneficial. I would then include a fact sheet about the pyramid to back up any questions the operator may have.

Another part of the media kit that is important is the “extra” materials. I think it would be helpful to include a feeding table document for the operator to fill in as they use the pyramid. You can explain that they should fill in which types of food they are feeding, at what times and document the progress of the fish as well. This is something that can be trackable and both Tetra Corp. and the operator can see results from.

A final addition to the kit, could be success stories with pictures and examples of “meal plans” from other fish feeding pyramid users. These stories will bring this product full circle and create that want for the product and plan as a whole.
