PR News Analysis Brief #1

Campaign Communications: A Look at Obama’s Social Media Success
President Obama and his team of social media experts have set the stage for politicians and holders of office to come. Our 44th president was the first to utilize social media when he first ran back in 2008. Now, eight years later Obama has impressed the social media world, followers of his or not. The president has not only used this platform to speak his words and promote others, but also to provide the American people with information across a platform they frequently use and respect.
This communication style is something that has changed from 2008 until now. And the President, along with the candidates running in the 2016 election will have to continue to utilize this voters goldmine. Staying connected to the public is just one of the important ways to show you care now days. Thankfully President Obama’s digital team has served him right.

This article is not only important as a voter in the upcoming election, but it reiterates the fact that social media plays an enormous role in influencing your audience. Whether you put this in perspective as a company, sharing ideas with your customers. Or as an individual who promotes his own brand. If the busiest man in America can do it right, we should be able to as well.

How Donald Trump Tends His Media Blacklist
Ironically enough another post about the power of social media, although this time the article highlights the misuse and the effects that can have on a  person’s brand. Donald Trump, the Republican Party’s Presidential Nominee has been putting his foot in his mouth, whether it be on camera or on the screen.

This time the candidate is threatening reporters and news outlets that aren’t publishing or sharing all things Trump. He warns that if elected he will open up the libel laws, allowing people to sue reporters. All of the threats come with little validity considering anyone can be a reporter today and thankfully the First Amendment does still protect us.

This importance of this article is the reminder of how we promote our companies, brands and ourselves. Social media is a large part of people’s lives and how they are influenced. Threatening or ill hearted remarks are some that stay with people forever, and in this case do not resonate well with Donald.

  1. Hi Alison,
I really like your post in regards to Donald Trump. You mentioned how he is constantly putting his foot in his mouth on social media, but in particular Twitter. I also saw on the news tonight that Trump just posted more punches at Hillary Clinton. Every time I hear Trump's name on the news, it's because he was throwing a bunch at another presidental candidate. I think it's important for people to see how he acts on social media, because if he is doing this to his competitors, then how is he going to run this country??

  2. Hi, Ali!

Both articles you chose seem very interesting! With the next election coming up, it's interesting to watch how both parties handle the flow of information through social media. It allows citizens to find out more about both good and bad information on all of the candidates. It's interesting to think about how elections were run JK the past and how social media has changed that all!

  3. I wasn't sure, at initial glance, if I would agree with the significance of these stories, but you did a great job writing and a great job justifying. Heads up, we are supposed to be using AP style, not APA. :)
